Matthew records the first of Jesus' five great discourses here with the Sermon on the Mount containing what we call The Beautitudes.

Jesus accomplished what Adam did not, which Israel did not, and which we do not.  This passage puts on display the active obedience of Christ.  He not only serves as the perfect example in resisting temptation, but He resists temptation for us.  

Jesus begins his public ministry and calls his first disciples.  

All three persons of the Godhead are present and active at the baptism of Jesus.  This passage is not only about the commissioning of Jesus for His mission but also about the doctrine of the Trinity. 

We continue our study in Matthew.  John the Baptist, the last of the OT prophets comes on the scene declaring that the Kingdom of God has come!

We continue our study in Matthew with the chronology of the boy Jesus - but it is so much more than that!  Scripture is being fulfilled - Jesus is the new Israel.
