This familiar parable is not only about a son who squandered his father’s money.  Nor is it only about a son who was bitter at his brother’s return home.  It is about the deep, deep love of a father for his child.  

Three parables follow the Pharisees complaint against Jesus that He “eats with sinners and tax-collectors.”  We explore the first two with the Parable of the Lost Sheep and the Parable of the Lost Coin

Jesus teaches his disciples and those who are considering following him to count the cost.  Jesus has paid it all, but if we decide to follow him, there may be a cost.  

Jesus uses the occasion of a sabbath dinner to expose the hard hearts, the pride, and the rejection of Israel.  However, there is an invitation, an invitation to believe in the Lord Jesus - an invitation to the kingdom table.  

Once again, Jesus responds to a question with a call to repent - to believe while the door is open.

The kingdom of God has invaded the kingdom of the world.  With this miracle, and these two parables, Jesus teaches us of this reality and the nature of His kingdom.  

Jesus once again issues a call for repentance because perishing is just a matter of time.  The greatest danger we face isn't a plane crash, a car accident, a virus, or a tyrannical governor; the greatest threat is not being prepared to meet the Lord. 

Over the Christmas season, we've been singing "Peace on the earth, good will toward men," but now Jesus says, "You think I've come to bring peace? No, but division."  What exactly is going on?  Well... the King has come.  Some receive Him, and some reject Him.  

O Little Town of Bethlehem!  This familiar hymn isn't about the little town but the great King who comes from there!  

God offers to give Ahaz a sign.  Ahaz doesn't want one.  God imposes a sign.  It is both a warning and a blessing!  It is the sign of a virgin with child - looking forward to the Lord Jesus.
